I have been studying Tai Ch Chuan since 1994 as a student in the Five Winds School, founded by Sifu (Master) Ian Cameron. Ian is an accomplished and respected teacher who is instrumental in ensuring that the correct information and methods are passed on to his students. I am a qualified Instructor in Hand Form, Push Hands, Applications and the Sword Form, and I helped establish and run a class in Edinburgh before moving to Yorkshire. I am an instructor member of the Tai Chi Union for Great Britain and am also a recognised instructor in the BCCMA (British Council for Chinese Martial Arts). As a teacher I enjoy encouraging the students to develop themselves both physically and mentally. |

I feel that Tai Chi presents itself like the "skin" being peeled from an onion: through practice the skin drops away to reveal a new question at each level. It is the task of the diligent student, with the aid of a knowledgeable instructor, to search for the answers. Tai Chi is practiced by some for health alone, and it is true to say that "the final purpose of Tai Chi is to lengthen life and maintain youth". However, it is as arduous as any Martial Art, developing personal discipline and increasing self confidence.

Since moving to Yorkshire, I have taken the opportunity to make myself aware of Yang and Cheng Man-ch'ing styles of Tai Chi. I also train with a colleague who is adept in Baguazhang. I have attended seminars by Dan Docherty who has been training Wudang Tai Chi since 1975 and Nigel Sutton who is a leading exponent of Yang and Cheng Man-ch'ing styles. An awareness of the different styles within Tai Chi will, I feel, help me widen my understanding of this complex art. I was instrumental in organizing the Five Winds residential seminars Tai Chi 2000 and Tai Chi 2001, held at Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh. During these weekends, students guided by Sifu Cameron, were encouraged to work together, to consolidate our Tai Chi foundation. The development I have been fortunate to achieve has grown from simple inquisitiveness to daily practice, bringing with it a sense of enjoyment and accomplishment. I am ever grateful for the guidance and immense skill levels of Sifu Cameron, who has recognised my enthusiasm and encouraged me every step of this "never ending" journey. If you'd like to see more of my activities, then you can view my web site at http://www.uktaichi.com. |
Come and join me and try Tai Chi for yourself. I run a class at Tadcaster Grammar School, Tadcaster, near Wetherby. Classes are every Tuesday (for beginners, from 7-9pm) and Wednesday (for intermediates, from 7-9pm).
