Instructor Levels - Definitions

The Five Winds School has five levels of Instructor defined as follows:

Junior Instructor (J.I.)

Qualified in: Hand Forms and Pushing Hands

  • Junior Instructors will normally be found assisting in the classes of higher level instructors but may run their own class with the permission of the Chief Instructor (C.I.)
  • J.I.s may not do public demonstrations or seminars etc. except as part of a team event approved by the C.I.

Intermediate Instructor (I.I.)

Qualified in: Hand Forms; Pushing Hands; some Self-Defense; One Weapon (depending on knowledge and performance of weapon).

  • I.I.s may run their own class but only with the permission of the C.I.
  • I.I.s may do public demonstrations, seminars etc. but only with the permission of the C.I. Such permission must be sought for each event.

Instructor

Qualified in: Hand forms; Pushing Hands; Self-Defense; Weapons.

  • Instructors may run classes but must inform the C.I.
  • Instructors may do public demonstrations, seminars, etc., but only with the permission of the C.I. Such permission must be sought for each event.

Senior Instructor

Qualified in: All aspects of Tai Chi Chuan

  • S.I.s may run their own classes but must inform the C.I.
  • S.I.s may do public demonstrations but must inform the C.I.
  • S.I.s may do seminars, etc., but only with the permission of the C.I. Such permission must be sought for each event.
  • S.I.s will generally assist the C.I.

Chief Instructor - Sifu Ian Cameron, Founder of the Five Winds School of Tai Chi Chuan

The C.I.'s decisions are final in all matters pertaining to the Five Winds School of Tai Chi Chuan.

General Rules for All Instructors

All instructors must

  • have a minimum of two years practicing experience.
  • only teach those aspects of the system for which they are qualified. Aspects qualified will be listed on certificates. Students must be referred to a higher level Instructor when appropriate.
  • commit to working towards progression to Instructor level where appropriate.
  • not teach aspects in isolation to outsiders (i.e. non-registered students).
  • have regular contact with C.I. or S.I.s with a view to maintaining and improving standards.
  • respect their students and maintain the tradition of elder and younger brothers and sisters in Tai Chi Chuan being supportive of each other.
  • teach honestly and not make false claims.
  • state their level of qualification in any publicity used to attract students or to advertise events.
  • pay due care and attention to the safety of their students whilst in class.
  • act responsibly and honestly in all financial matters pertaining to their classes.
  • not produce books, videos, etc., without the permission of the C.I.
  • not run their classes in such a way as to adversely infringe upon another Five Winds School Instructor's activity.
  • not claim to represent the Five Winds School in the media without the permission of the C.I. Technical articles must always be scrutinised by the C.I. before publication.
  • not, when attending other Instructor's classes, presume that certification entitles them to teach in such classes, unless specifically invited to do so by the class Instructor.
  • not denigrate fellow Five Winds Instructors to students or outsiders.
  • not in anyway bring the Five Winds School into disrepute.

Code of Practice - Breaches

Any breach of this Code of Practice could result in a number of penalties: demotion of qualification; withdrawal of qualification; expulsion from the School, depending upon the seriousness of the breach.

Any breaches, complaints or grievances should be brought to the attention of the C.I. or S.I.s, where upon they will be dealt with fairly giving all parties concerned the opportunity to state their position.

The C.I.'s decision is final.

Instructor Assessments for Qualification

In all cases the Assessor's decision is final. No appeals will be considered and no discussion or correspondence will be entered into.


This Code of Practice is subject to amendment as and when necessary.
