Filming for the BBC Tai Chi Ident Segment
Early in 2003, Sifu Cameron was asked to help 4am Films put together a new Ident for BBC 1 television which would showcase Tai Chi. "Idents" are the short segments of film that are shown on BBBC 1, during the continuity announcements between programmes. The current theme for these films is movement and dance, and the BBC already had a number of these films in use, including one showning Capoeira being performed on a roof top.
Sifu Cameron and members of the casting company auditioned Tai Chi practitioners from a number of schools in Scotland, along with dancers and models, before settling on the final group for the shoot. The actual sequence used in the Ident is a short section from the Wudang round form choreographed by Sifu Cameron. For the two members of the group not familiar with the style (Tina and Katy), this meant a crash course in the form!

After a day of intense rehearsal in Glasgow, the actual shoot took place over two very busy days, with very early starts, high on Rannoch Moor. The weather was very kind - it never really rained, which is something for Scotland; and the fighter jets were only roaring overhead for an hour or so, early each day.

The location for the shoot, at Lochan na h-Achlaise, on Rannoch Moor.
It's hard to imagine, if you've never been involved in such a project, just how much effort it takes to film 26 seconds of TV. The crew, along with all the support, including equipment, make-up and catering, took up one carriage way of the busy road beside the loch, requiring temporary traffic lights for two days.

Although it crosses some wild country, the narrow road across Rannoch Moor is the main route up the West coast of Scotland into the highlands. Indeed, the filming caused such a stir that it even made a story in the local news paper!

The final result can be viewed on-line at a BBC website. All the Idents currently in use are shown and the Tai Chi Ident is given at the bottom of the page. |

As a post-script to this adventure, Malcolm, who readers may recognize as the main face of Tai Chi in the ident, was asked to do some Tai Chi choreography for an episode of "Monarch of the Glen". This is a soap set in a stately home in Scotland. As well as choreographing the Tai Chi, he also landed a "walk on" part as one of the practitioners in the group!
